Diversity in Action Celebrated at Lamar Middle School

Lamar Middle School is celebrating Diversity in Action (DIA) on Monday, May 2nd.

This family friendly event will run from 5:30pm – 7:30pm at the school (2120 N. 1st St. in Temple), and will include:

  • Performance by City of Temple Folklorica dancers.
  • Rhoda Gyan is from Africa and will share her display about the culture and history of the continent.
  • Ruth Bridges, from Temple College, will show diversity changes in Temple and in Temple ISD.
  • Lamar Middle School Teacher Sharon Hawes will offer assistance with Math.

There will also be African and Mexican crafts, games of Mexican Bingo, and attendees will have a chance to bust a piñata.

Additionally, Dollar General, a corporate DIA sponsor, will be at the event.

It’s also the 20th anniversary of DIA and the celebration of El Dia de los Ninos/

El Dia de los Libros (Children’s Day/Book Day), so H-E-B is providing a 20th Birthday Cake!

Organized by Lamar Librarian Sherry Burnett, she said “As the librarian, I feel that diversity is important and that we should recognize and celebrate uniqueness. I work to create collections so that all children can find books that they can relate to and understand.”

We hope you’ll join us for this fun, family friendly, free event that will celebrate the diversity of Temple and our world.
