Family
On
January 6, 1759, I married Martha Dandridge Custis. We had a good marriage, and
together raised our two children, John Parke Custis and Martha Parke Custis, affectionately
called "Jackie" and "Patsy". Later the we raised two of Mrs.
Washington's grandchildren, Eleanor Parke Custis and George Washington Parke Custis.
Martha and I never had any children together—my earlier bout with smallpox
followed, possibly, by tuberculosis may have made me sterile. We moved to Mount
Vernon, where I took up the life of a genteel planter and political figure.
