Why are kids reading so much at Bonham?
A. Theyre smarter than average
B. They enjoy reading more than the average kid
C. Accelerated Reader
D. All of the above!
What is Accelerated Reader?
A computerized reading program that allows students to read books of
their choice and take tests over them. Students earn points for tests
they pass.
What makes it more successful than other reading programs?
Teachers are able to customize the program to the students
individual needs. Using S.T.A.R. diagnostic software, a students
reading level is determined. Teachers and students can then both use
this information to help choose appropriate books from almost 4000 A.R.
titles. Reading books in the range appropriate for the student results
in increased vocabulary and comprehension. This range is called their
Zone of Proximal Development.
So whats the big deal about reading?
Studies show that increasing reading skills will increase skills in
all other subject areas including math! Studies also show that it is
at the middle school age that students are most likely to stop reading.
By requiring students to continue to read but allowing them the freedom
to choose their own books, we hope our students will enjoy reading more
and choose to continue reading for life.
