What is Contrast?

Now that you have a basic understanding of color, it is important to understand the concept of contrast as well. Contrast creates emphasis to both the printed and graphic objects in a web page. It can be developed through the use of different colors, sizes, shapes, and textures. It may be used to create a focal point that grabs a visiter's attention or it may be help to direct the viewer's eyes from one area of the web page to another.

Contrasting Text and Backgrounds

Developing contrast with text it can be as simple as making one word bold or italic so that it will stand out from the rest of the sentence. Using larger text or a different font for a title helps to produce contrast that organizes information. When it comes to readability, black text on a white background is highly recommended. it produces the greatest amount of contrast and is best for most readers. Other text colors may be used as long as they contrast well with the background color. Look at the examples of colored text above. Which combinations produce the greatest amount of contrast?

Be aware that older eyes may have difficulty differentiating between colors that are similar. Blue and green and purple lettering may be difficult to read when used together. Colored backgrounds that include patterns and textures can be especially problematic.

Images and Contrast

Contrast is also used to create a center of interest on a web page. Images can be used to attract attention and direct attention to a particular part of a web page. Images can also
add interest add variety to the text on a page.
