File Storage

Your TISD network account allows you the opportunity to access your documents from anywhere in the district but it does not allow for the unlimited storage of documents on its file servers. It is therefore important to understand the following concepts:

Roaming Profiles

A computer "Profile" is quite different from what you might think considering our most common association for this word. If someone should mention your roaming profile, they are referring to your personal preferences for application and program settings, and your choice of desktop pictures etc. These individual preferences follow you from computer to computer throughout the TISD network and are said to roam with you. In a similar fashion, the documents you save to your Desktop and your My Documents folder roam with you and are accessible to you throughout the district providing that you always remember to log out from each computer before logging into another one.

My Documents and Desktop

Storage space in a classroom generally takes the form of closets and shelves but with a computer you can store a huge amount of information in a very small space. Data stored in a computer is organized in much the same fashion as a desk or filing cabinet. Your computer's Desktop is a great place to put a few things that need your immediate attention but soon it can get messy. Your My Documents folder is much better place for the organization of your documents. In this location you can create additional folders so that your most important documents are saved and stored on a TISD server where they will roam with you. However, just as a real filing cabinet gets full so will this portable space. TISD has set limits for the amount of roaming server storage space that each user may access. This means that you should learn to store less important documents that are not need frequently in your computer's "C" Drive. You should also clean up your My Documents folder frequently by throwing away unnecessary files and emptying the recycle bin. TISD computer users should learn to back up their information regularly to a floppy disk, CDRW or other backup device. If you would like instruction in how to do this, please see your Campus Technology Liaison or contact the Technology Help Desk.
