Temple ISD School Nutrition supports the district goals by providing nutritious meals to all students in a safe and friendly environment that promotes education and healthy lifestyles.

Temple ISD School Nutrition participates in the School Breakfast Program, National School Lunch Program, After School Snack Program and the Fresh Fruit Vegetable Program at Hector P. Garcia.  The district adheres to the Texas Department of Agriculture policies and procedures, including the Texas Public School Nutrition Policy to ensure all meals meet the nutrition standards and guidelines. As part of the Healthy Hunger Free Kids Act to improve the nutrition of student meals, meals are now served in 5 components; which are the same components as MyPlate: Fruit, Vegetables, Protein, Grain, and Dairy. In addition, the new standards include:

  • Age-appropriate calorie limits
  • Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving)
  • A variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
  • Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)
  • More whole grains
  • Decreased sodium

TISD will be serving meals during the Summer.

Food Allergies

Under the National School Lunch Program Act, the School Nutrition Services is required to adhere to specific regulations to accomodate special diets for students enrolled in Temple ISD.

Generally, children with food allergies or intolerances do not have a disability as defined in any of the Acts or laws, and the school nutrition services may, but is not required to make food substitutions for them.  However, when food allergies result in servere, life-threatening (anaphylactic) reactions, the child's condition would meet the definition of "disability" and the substitutions prescribed by a recognized medical authority must be made.

If your child has a food allergy, you must notify the school of the allergy and provide written documentation from a licensed physician with the type of food allergy and specific substitutions needed.  All food allergy documentation must be updated yearly.

Note:  Juice is not a substitution for milk unless the food allery is defined as a disability.

Food Safety

The Temple ISD School Nutrition Department has implemented the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) food safety program required by the Texas Department of Agriculture.  The department meets the highest food safety standards as established by state and local health department.

Kitchens are inspected twice in a school year by the Bell County Health Department.  Cafeteria Managers, Manager Trainees and Supervisors are required to be state approved in Certified Food Management.  Cafeteria specialist and subs must attend the Bell County Health Department food safety program yearly. Food Safety In-service training is provided to all staff twice a year along with continued weekly mini trainings on site.
