GIFTED AND TALENTED - TRAINING FOR SECONDARY TEACHERS - THREE

How does training differ for teachers of high school or middle school classes?

A middle or high school teacher is advised to have the following training:

1. Identification and Assessment of the Gifted and Talented.
2. Nature and Needs of the Gifted and Talented, AND
3. 18 hours of basic training related to Pre-Advance Placement, Pre-International Baccalaureate,
Advanced Placement, or International Baccalaureate training for your content area.

The Advanced Placement® and International Baccalaureate® organizations provide training for
teachers who teach advanced content for the examinations our high school juniors and seniors take
to earn university credit. This training prepares teachers so their students will be successful on
the AP and IB examinations. Success on these examinations is part of the State’s reported data
for the evaluation of the district’s gifted and talented program.

Along with 30 hours of basic training, the annual six continuing hours for high school teachers should
also be through the Advanced Placement® and International Baccalaureate® training programs.
