welcome really glad to hear really glad there was lots of great conversations going on and that I had to really elevate my voice to get everybody to get down and start talking and I will stop talking momentarily  raise your hand if you are brand new Gabapentin also kind of the antithesis of that one raise your hand if you're returning Bend or in this room you are brand new to this program and you were wondering what in the world am I doing here  Texadelphia and what do I do when where do I go and how do I do it ask the people who are your liaison as two people who just had their a drain because they have been there before and they have done this before does that mean that we have all of the answers but you been there before and we can help you figure out where you need to go when you need to go and what you need to do we'll talk about some of that today but I'm not going to I'm not going to sit up here and talk about all the answers I am going to bring it's a we can talk at our tables talk to monster cells and discover some of this for kind of on our road Bend feel noticed on the table in front of you some of you already have it opened and flipping through it it's the handbook I would strongly recommend reading through it all the way yes I do realize what I just asked  stop I read through it every year just to brush up on everything that it's say is it all really really exciting stuff no but it is all very very it's all very important so I would I would strongly recommend that you familiarize yourself with that and familiarize yourself with lower liaison  Okay so  try to address this at a high what is this about what is this meant for program we are all here because we heard something or saw something that said hey do you like to be a wildcat mentor and we said yes every single one of us in this room said yes and that's why we're here so what is this about  Isabel building relationships  this is about building relationships one-on-one with kids who have been as needing relationship  that's what we're here for that's what we're here to do that's what we're asking you to do on a regular basis build a relationship show up I'll be hitting on that I'll be hitting on that again alright also on that note for job is not to fix a student we're here to build relationships we're not here we're not here to fix anybody  your job is to be a mentor and be there so at this point in time I'm going to get us all about 5 to 10 minutes to talk at the table that you're with except for this young man over here who's over by himself let's try to Define Adventure what is it that a mentor is who is a mentor and what do they do and after about 5 to 10 minutes I'll start yelling again and will take volunteers and drinks and we'll go from there I think I like you now Canary vet  no that's ok Google building a trusting relationship can share build trust a safe environment. I would agree with all of that could work that tape anybody else I think they I think North America the best liquor in North America that's how bad  yes sir be a friend different approaches to remember listen to the child's interest and what sparks her attention I remember next time somehow puzzle game remember pension to their lights into their dislikes be encouraging  none of those things if you don't show up  so that's that's going to be something that I'm going to harp on  Skillet build relationships when you're not there so there we go  our mentors perfect major softball started to laugh it up no we're not perfect in this relationship may not be the smoothest thing that you've ever done the very first year I was a mentor by my relationship with my mentor was the first half of the year did something happen over tell me different kid and it kind of went South that semester in at some point in time you know he came to a mutual understanding with his counselor and everybody call that he didn't want to be in the program anymore hurt rejection hurts  sense so show up be a friend remember build a trusting relationship do your part and if that can ultimately rejected  you did your best now that's like the worst case scenario there are lots of how to break stories in this room might have been a mentor for more than one year and I have got some great stories to is there some great stories sitting at your yearly raisins have some great stories they know these things  another thing that you brought what is remember what they like and they dislike not every kid is into academics although we should encourage them and their studies Fender akademiks not every kid is into showing or sports or different play some of which that we may want others that we may not you may not be 100% perfectly paired up with the child that has the exact same interest and that's okay this will be a learning experience for you as well it's a relationship so in two ways one more thing that I'd like to touch on is confidentiality repair  your child May confide some things in you importance to be a friend in to remember if you show up and keeping that confidential is very important to them and it's very important for building that relationship if it is if you question about whether or not what has been confided is threatening or dangerous in any way what bashing  talk to the school counselor and talk to a liaison bring it to bring it to the attention of counselor in the board and and we will it is if it needs to be addressed if it needs to be escalated we will certain can do that but remembering that confidentiality is very important to this we're all in here raise the sixth graders of the sixth grade mentors are in a completely other room 5th graders are in a slightly different spot mentally and emotionally their Curious although some of them may not come out that way when you meet them they may not be the most open person in the world you may have to dig you may have to pry you made this have to show up and be there and that's good and that's okay they can also be critical sometimes they can be critical White I saw somebody over here do this why aren't we doing this  why do you only show up on this day why don't you show up all the time that's okay that's okay they're going to be that one High song something that I know that they're doing in the other room and we're going to do for about 5 to 10 minutes in here a couple of list of things that you might want to do with your student  and a couple of us something do's and don'ts  what you should do this is what you shouldn't do we've already talked about being a friend then for be there glad to save environment let's come up with a handful more things to do at the shop gold star on Gibson truck we're here for I know it's it's it's kind of a downer and and I hate to be the messenger of bad news because we all know the joy that it can be to give someone a gift even if it's small true  you can bring food if you want to show up you don't want to eat. it would be really nice if when you brought food for them to I would say try to avoid and try to avoid can I just say okay and thank you for bringing that check your ego come outside here we go all right outside is not part of this program news program before during the school year and during school hours  if you want to have contacts I would also avoid trading phone numbers I would have void trading email addresses Warface Twitter or whatever it is a void that you're your primary contact should be through the school thank you that was pretty much appreciate that if you want to go down and I won't go down and very far I'll let your liaison if you want to have outside contact outside of the school with your student that has to go be approved by these fool lower and the parents so that's all I'm going to say about that it's a really really sticky situation how far is this program and what I'm going to say to you today is no outside contact and be very clear all I would work like this the stupid  protect the student to crazy world we live in protect yourself crazy world we live in yes ma'am I see that sponsored events for playing at the school we did that for you as far as porting me back I'm getting a nod from neck order okay to meet for 40 minutes probably Ray questions  what about the ethical programs I taste for there in the school  I don't know the answer to that question look up that I'm getting an object right  shawty like a dog who comes up with it cool cracker cookie and I'm cool famous person so how are we looking at that I want to talk about I'm going to punch that one  play that's what you want to do counselor in Paris apparent the kid wants it or do to you and ask you well as ever does everyone have a mentor or why you know it should be filled out the forms I kind of have an idea they're going to want you to be able to tell him what your role is in their kids life so be prepared to answer some wisdom with us call before you go to the school  make sure that they're there that their present and it may actually be worth sing the question of are they in a place where they can see what is a district so when you look at this room think about there is a sixth grade group of mentors over on the other side of the building and the reason I say that if you go online and you said Mentor programs you are now part of one of the largest the same engine problems in the United States I've been 7 years and the reason we can figure that out first group of friends are now seniors in high school what is came home this sudden always try to give you a real life story I went to speak to Napa church and usually try to take a form of entity with and it was right after graduation and I just didn't have time to get them into two to meet me there come with me and I'm sitting on the front row and I had my little can speech in my hands I was ready to go and this young lady comes up but she said do you remember me she was mine into in 5th grade she's now a singer  now the miracle of their names Olivia but the miracle of it is she was my first and in here and we were at the old Ralph what's an alarm 35 and she was very overweight she had somebody over here to our dad would be really honest she had zero social skills mean zero the ability to talk with someone else or to communicate there was this one it was a really hard year for me because I know how to work with him because he was really hard to have a car bear in mind I'm sitting there in a strange city she comes to me and says I bet you don't know who I am her second comment was why are you here to talk about the mental problem would you like me to get up and talk about it  when working with your minties husband talk to me but she was talking with placing her to something else that she was on speaker for the summer because we had a really hectic pussy print minimum interest this year she was in the car and so when I picked her up I never met her mother before and I speaking up makes your mother she still she doesn't do that  lie to the store  a lot can you have your mini you don't know whether in the problem and you may never know why they're in the program but I will assure you that the school personnel former School  the life they did those kill certain those teachers see something in that child that they know that I meant working make a difference what is the name that we don't have kids that maybe they have more severe needs but the students that are selected for this program or student that we feel like you are the thing that can make the difference and I will leave you with a little fact that I think this is amazing there is been a lot of research over the years between chiller it wasn't called failure to thrive children failure to thrive children our children that are jelly underweight and have physical problems have the most problems they have call cousin issues 41 significant and that's the power that you have because with you will realize it this year or not and the coming year we will realize it for a large you will be that one significant thank you for your play. It is a commitment and it's hard my dog is such that it's red at the time and it's hard to carbon out if he has been like that all the time regularly and tell I'm so competitive I have complete with him I think about it on the calendar it says you have to leave the meeting you have to leave something because that is your commitment and I'm just saying we all grapple with that thank you I appreciate it have a great day today because the kids have arrived all the time high school who wants a price until we get all the way high  Ray Allen
