Events Surrounding Constitution Week at Temple ISD

September 5th, 2017

Cater Elementary – Cater students will participate in a Freedom Walk.  They will wear red, white, and blue.  They will sing patriotic songs and walk around the neighborhood block.  The older students will learn about the events of 9/11.  The younger students will talk about heroes in our community.  All students will learn how to respect our American Flag.

September 11th, 2017

Raye Allen Elementary – Students will learn “My Country Tis of Thee” and “The Star Spangled Banner”.  Art students will make flags for the Freedom walk.  The cafeteria will be decorated with patriotic decorations.  Staff and Students are encouraged to wear Red, White, and Blue.  During activity time (all times during day the except 11:45 – 1) all classes will meet in the gym to say the pledge, sing “The Star Spangled Banner” and watch a power point presentation on 9/11.  After the video, students will go on a Freedom Walk around the school, carrying flags.  A daily Freedom Week announcement will be made.

Kennedy Powell Elementary – 5th grade student will lead the campus announcements and include a daily informational ready, September 11-15.  The reading will be student lead, with teacher support, to include research of Celebrate Freedom Week.  Announcements may include meaning and importance of Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, Emancipation Proclamation, US Constitution, and Veteran’s Day.  During library time, students will view “The Constitution at Work: Elementary Education”.  All staff and students will be invited/encouraged to wear patriotic colored clothing.  5ht Grade ELA students will dissect the Preamble to the Constitution.

Western Hills – Students will listen to daily announcements about the reasons why the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and the Bill of Rights are important to us as Americans.  First grade students will be introduced to the Preamble of the Constitution by listening to “We the People”.

Hector P. Garcia Elementary – What is an American? Students will brainstorm ideas of what it is to be an American. 

Jefferson Elementary – Students will interview staff members that have served in the armed forces.  The interviews will be compiled into one video and uploaded to a YouTube channel.  Each classroom will view the video on 9/11.  The link will be on the Jefferson home page.

Scott Elementary - We will begin with remembering 9/11 and over the course of the week look at national symbols.  We will round out our time with the presentation of our campus-wide preamble project on Constitution Day.  This video will also be shared with the VA Hospital.   

9/11 Activities from grade levels:

Kinder: After a brief, age appropriate discussion with our students about the events that took place on September 11th, our kindergarteners will be making a Patriots Day 9/11 Remembrance booklet.

First Grade: Students will write a letter to their hero using sentence stem My Hero is…..

Third Grade: 3rd grade will be reading 'The Man That Walked Between the Towers' and use that book for the lesson.

Thornton Elementary – Staff and students will be encouraged to wear Red, White, and Blue.  Students will learn the song “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and will sing it during morning announcements.  Staff and students will gather around the flagpole at 8:00am.  After the raising of the flags, students will say the pledge, sing “You’re a Grand Old Flag”, and honor any members who have served in our community.  The fourth and fifth grade students will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “We Remember”.  Students will build symbols of freedom out of recyclables for display. 

Travis Science Academy – Students will have a lesson September 11th – September 15th using resources from the National Constitution Resource Center.

Bonham Middle School – Students will wear patriotic clothes for 9/11 remembrance and an announcement will be developed on Freedom of Speech.

Lamar Middle School – At 8:00am students will participate in a flag raising ceremony.

Edwards Academy – Staff will read the Preamble, out loud, after the pledge. Mr. Hunter will present a short talk on the goals of the Constitution. During the day students will take a virtual field trip to the “Amending America” exhibit at the National Archives. http://www.archives.gov/calendar/constitution-day/
Once they have completed the virtual tour, students will write a short persuasive essay convincing others to visit the exhibit.

Temple High School - World History – Multinationalism of September 11th.  Compare and contrast the 10 Commandments and the Constitution.
Government – 9/11 Remembrance video and discussion.
GPS – Students will analyze different types of maps and mapping components to 9/11.  They will explain what type, its influence, and the story of what those maps tell.
US History – Flocabulary Bill of Rights video, extra reading and quiz.
Economics – Students will view news footage of 9/11 and will discuss media portrayal of the events.  They will also do a webquest on the US and global economic impact of 9/11.  They will discuss the ideas in the articles on the websites.

September 12th, 2017

Western Hills Elementary – Tuesday, September 12th – Thursday, September 14th Students will be given a copy of the Preamble of the Constitution for memorization.  The meaning will be analyzed and explained to help students better understand the reason why the Constitution is so important to America.

Hector P. Garcia Elementary – Bill of Rights - Students will write thank you notes for what they are most thankful for concerning the Bill of Rights.

Bonham Middle School – We will do a lesson during the day on Freedom of the Press

September 13th, 2017

Hector P. Garcia Elementary – Abolitionist Movement – Students will research the Grimke sisters, Abe Lincoln, and others that contributed to the movement to end slavery.

Bonham Middle School – We will do a lesson during the day on Freedom of Religion

September 14th, 2017

Hector P. Garcia Elementary – We the Kids – Student will read/listen to We the Kids and sign the constitution with quills on their way to activities that day.

Bonham Middle School – We will do a lesson during the day on Freedom of Assembly

September 15th, 2017

Temple High School - IB World Studies – Activity over the Bill of Rights.
Government – How does the Constitution structure government to ensure a division of power?, Constitution Vocabulary

Western Hills Elementary – Two students who have memorized the Preamble will recite this during the morning announcements.  During lunch times for all student, different students will be on stage reciting the Preamble.

Hector P. Garcia Elementary – We are Americans Parade – Students will find out their country of origin for their family and write in on construction paper.  They will walk around the parking lot/street outside the school. 

Bonham Middle School – We will do a lesson during the day on Freedom of Petition

September 17th, 2017

Temple High School – Economics – Students will look at the Constitution and specifically focus on property rights.  They will complete graphic organizers about property rights and characteristics of the free enterprise system.  Students will come up with real world examples of these rights and characteristics.

Meridith Dunbar Early Childhood Academy - We will recognize the United States Flag. The students will learn to recognize the colors red, white, and blue. The teacher will relate to the students how the constitution protects us and keeps all Americans safe as our teachers protect and keep us safe at school.
