Mosquito Related Illness
With mosquito season upon us, it is a good time to review the best ways to avoid bites and determine guidelines for safe use of insect repellents when needed especially when applying to children.
Quick tips include:
-
Don't let mosquitoes breed- Mosquitoes breed in standing water. Remove standing water in kiddie pools, planters and outdoor containers that might collect water.
-
Avoid hot spots-Avoid areas with large populations of mosquitoes and avoid being out at times when mosquitoes are most active
-
Create a barrier-Wear full-coverage shoes and clothing to avoid bites. Cover strollers with netting to protect the child. Make sure window and door screens are intact
-
Be aware of chemical repellents recommended for effective protection especially when applying to children
-
read labels and adhere to age related recommendations
-
watch for reactions to applied repellents --skin irritations, rashes and redness
-
