TEMPLE, Texas — The Temple Independent School District Theatre Arts program has been recognized as a District of Distinction by the Texas Educational Theatre Association (TxETA).
Temple ISD was named an Exemplary District by TxETA, which is the highest designation a district can receive for K-12 theatre programs through the District of Distinction program. The District of Distinction Awards recognize school districts who are making outstanding contributions to raising the standards for theatre education, as observed through achievement, curation of resources, diversity, and advocacy for theatre arts. Districts must apply for the program and selection is based on a variety of criteria ranging from course offerings to performance venues, performance opportunities to a number of curriculum-related requirements, leadership and professional development to activities and resources available to students and staff. There are a total of 26 categories included on the applications, which are scored on a 100-point scale. Districts must score an 86 or higher to earn Exemplary District recognition. Temple ISD was honored as an Exemplary District during the TxETA convention in Arlington earlier this month.
“This award is a powerful testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, parents, administrators, and, most importantly, our phenomenal theatre directors and educators,” said Catrina Lotspeich, Director of Fine Arts for ISD. “Theatre is a vital component of a well-rounded education. It doesn’t just teach performance; it builds confidence, promotes collaboration, and develops critical thinking skills essential for success in any field. We are incredibly proud to be recognized as a leader in theatre education across the state.”
By earning TxETA District of Distinction honors, theatre arts becomes the third Temple ISD Fine Arts program to receive state or nationwide recognition this year. Temple ISD was also named a 2025 Best Community for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation and a District of Distinction by the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA).
