Temple HS Students Qualifies for HOSA International Leadership Conference

TEMPLE, Texas — Temple High School student Shamyia Miller has qualified to compete in the HOSA International Leadership Conference after earning a second-place finish at the organization’s State Leadership Conference in Corpus Christi earlier this week.

Miller, a senior in the Certified Nursing Assistant Program at Temple High School, took second place in the Patient Care competition at the State Leadership Conference. She becomes the first member in the history of the Temple HS chapter of HOSA to qualify to advance to the International Leadership Conference. The Patient Care competition challenges students to apply real-world healthcare skills, including patient communication, safety procedures, and hands-on clinical techniques. Miller successfully advanced through area and state-level competition, showcasing both technical ability and professionalism. She plans to pursue a career in healthcare, with a focus on becoming a Registered Nurse. Miller is excited to make history for the chapter and grateful for the opportunities her participation in HOSA and the Temple High School CNA program have provided for her as she moves toward achieving her goals.

“It is really exciting to know that I am the first person to accomplish this and also because I am a senior, so that adds on to an amazing thing that is happening,” Miller said. “I realize that this can help me develop new skills as I work toward my certification. When got to Temple High School, I saw the opportunities available that I know are not available at some other high schools. I am very grateful to have Temple High School and the ability to graduate with my CNA certification.”

HOSA-Future Health Professionals is an international student organization that promotes career opportunities in the healthcare industry and enhances the delivery of quality healthcare to all people. Elizabth Maybin is a teacher in the health sciences pathway at Temple High School, and one of three HOSA advisors, along with Sherri Humphrey and Kimberly Compton. Maybin says qualifying for the ILC is another example of how Miller has demonstrated exceptional knowledge, clinical skill, and a strong commitment to patient-centered care.

“Shamyia has shown remarkable dedication, compassion, and attention to detail – qualities essential in healthcare,” Maybin said. “This achievement reflects not only academic excellence but also a genuine passion for helping others.”

The HOSA International Leadership Conference will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana from June 17-19th. Top students from across the nation will compete, network with healthcare professionals, and further develop their healthcare skills.
