Temple HS One-Act Play Advances to UIL Regional Contest

TEMPLE, Texas — The Temple High School Theatre Arts One-Act Play is another step closer to competing for a state championship after advancing to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Regional competition by finishing with a top performance at the Area One-Act Play contest Saturday in Waco.

Temple High School is performing an updated version of Williams Shakespeare’s “Othello” with a more modern setting in this year’s competition. In addition to earning the right to move on to Regional, Temple High School’s production also had several cast and crew members earn individual recognition. Rhys Rounds was named All-Star Technician, Major Linzy and Jered Wozniak were both recognized on the All-Star Cast, and Avery Morris earned Honorable Mention. Temple High School was joined by Midway High School and Waxahachie High School in advancing to Regionals from Saturday’s Area competition.

“I am beyond proud of these students in our One-Act Play,” said Temple High School Theatre Arts Director Kayla Stewart. “It is an honor and a blessing to be in the top 24 schools in the state of Texas. We are hitting the ground running today to continue to make changes and grow our production of ‘Othello.’ We hope to have support on April 25th at Waco University as we perform around 12:30 p.m.”

The other three schools advancing to the Regional Competition are Cypress Ranch High School, Houston Carver High School, and Magnolia High School. The Regional One-Act Play contest will be held April 25th at the University High School Performing Arts Center in Waco. Admission is $10 per person. The top two plays at the Regional Contest will advance to the UIL State 6A One-Act Play contest in Austin in May.
