TEMPLE, Texas — The Temple Independent School District has been honored with the Best Communities in Music Education designation by The NAMM Foundation for their outstanding support and commitment to music education. Now in its 27th year, the Best Communities for Music program continues to spotlight and celebrate school districts and individual schools across the United States for their exemplary dedication to music education and their ongoing efforts to ensure equitable access to music learning as part of a well-rounded education.
The Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) award reaches K-12 communities nationwide, offering both recognition and momentum to strengthen and expand music education programs. In 2026, more than 1,000 school districts and schools – including public, private, charter, and parochial institutions – have been recognized for outstanding achievement in providing access to high-quality music education. This is the second consecutive year Temple ISD has been recognized with a BCME designation.
“Music education is one of the most powerful ways we help students develop creativity, confidence, discipline, and connection,” said Shirley Johnston, Fine Arts Coordinator for Temple ISD. “In Temple ISD, our music programs provide students with opportunities to grow not only as performers, but also as leaders, collaborators, and critical thinkers. Being recognized as one of the Best Communities for Music Education for the 2nd year reflects the dedication of our directors, teachers, students, families, and community members who work together to make the arts an essential part of the student experience. The designation affirms the value of the work happening in our classrooms every day and strengthens our commitment to providing exceptional music education opportunities for all students.”
Recipients of the 2026 BCME Awards were selected through a comprehensive application and review process that evaluates key indicators, including funding, instructional time, participation rates, facilities, and community support. To uphold the program’s rigor and credibility, all applications were independently reviewed and verified by WolfBrown, a leading research and evaluation firm specializing in education and the arts.
Temple ISD offers comprehensive music programs for students in grades K-12, including General Music, Choir, Band, and Orchestra. Throughout the year, students in these programs participate in a variety of events and performances, earning recognition at both the state and national levels. These opportunities include UIL Evaluations, All-Region and All-State Ensembles and Contests, Solo & Ensemble performances, and involvement with community music organizations.
