Temple HS Hosts Senior Signing Night Ceremony

TEMPLE, Texas — Temple High School gave the members of the Class of 2026 a chance to celebrate their postsecondary plans as the school hosted its first Senior Signing Night Ceremony Thursday evening (April 30) at the THS Gymnasium.

Signing Day ceremonies are typically held for student-athletes or Fine Arts students who will be continuing their careers in college. But Temple High School expanded the idea to provide all graduating seniors who wanted to participate the opportunity to announce their post high school plans and “sign” to continue their careers. The celebration included students who will be attending two or four-year colleges or universities, attending a trade school, joining the military, or going straight into the workforce. The evening started with acknowledgement from the high school’s counseling staff about the hours of hard work and commitment that had gone into making those dreams become reality. There were also words of encouragement from Temple College President Dr. Christy Ponce, before the students were called forward in groups to announce their plans and share the moment with families and classmates. Confetti poppers and streamers filled out the air as the students put pen to paper.

“Senior Signing Night provides a chance for seniors, their families, and the community to come together and honor the students’ efforts toward their postsecondary futures,” said Kristi Burke, College and Career Advisor for Temple High School. “It celebrates students pursuing two-year, four-year, military, and workforce paths, making sure every student is recognized. This event is especially meaningful for me because it marks a significant milestone for our first-generation families. We are proud to celebrate all of these students and their achievements!”

Alyssa Cobos signed to attend Temple College this fall where she plans to major in nursing. She hopes to become a labor and delivery nurse and says the signing night ceremony was an opportunity to celebrate her perseverance in reaching graduation, symbolized by having her daughter at the table with her as she made her announcement.

“Obviously this is an amazing opportunity, and it is really emotional for me,” Cobos said. “I am glad that I have the community and support to keep going. We walk the stage next month and I am excited about having the ability to make patients feel the way my nurses made me feel, so this is an emotional experience.”

David Martinez will be attending the University of Texas at Dallas and plans to major in mechanical engineering. He says UT-Dallas stood out to him because of the strength of the school’s engineering program and that participating in the signing night ceremony was also a way to say thank you to the Temple High School staff members who have impacted his high school career.

“This was really meaningful, and I appreciate the counselors for organizing this event for the whole school, this was really special as a senior after four years,” Martinez said. “I really appreciate this and Mrs. Burke and (Temple HS Counselor) Mrs. (Allison) Medrano for all they have done for me, and I want to give a shout out to them.”

Approximately 50 students took part in this first Senior Signing Night. Burke says she is looking forward to seeing the event grow in future years.
