Temple ISD Educators Recognized During ESC Region 12 BESA Celebration

TEMPLE, Texas — Two Temple Independent School District educators have been recognized for their contributions to Bilingual and ESL education by Education Service Center Region 12. The educators were honored during Region 12’s Bilingual and English as Second Language Awards (BESA) celebration on Thursday (May 7).

Ashley Jones, Director of Digital Learning for Temple ISD, was named Region 12 Collaborator of the Year. In her position, Jones works closely with the Bilingual Department to expand and strengthen family learning opportunities across the district, ensuring that campuses have access to the resources needed to support Emergent Bilingual students effectively. She is credited with aligning support with instructional needs and playing a key role in making sure teachers are well-trained and equipped with strategies that promote student success. Her nomination highlighted how Jones’ collaborative approach has fostered strong connections between departments, resulting in learning experiences that are both meaningful and engaging for students, families, and staff. For the past three years, digital learning has also partnered with Bilingual/ESL to bring STEM opportunities to the TISD Emergent Bilingual families and community.

“Being recognized at the Region 12 2026 BESA Ceremony is a profound honor,” Jones said. “For me, this distinction is not just a personal milestone, but a reflection of a deep-seated commitment to the students, staff, and families of Temple ISD. Supporting our educational community has been the cornerstone of my work. This recognition serves as a powerful reminder that true impact is built through intentional steps – the daily, purposeful actions we take to foster connection and growth across the district. I look forward to continuing this journey and further strengthening the digital learning landscape in Temple.”

Christina Hernandez, a second-grade bilingual teacher at Thornton Elementary School, was honored by Region 12 for Distinguished Achievement in Bilingual Math Instruction. Hernandez was recognized for developing her students’ listening and speaking skills while teaching them the essential math lessons. Her award highlighted how she makes complex concepts accessible and fun, which has led to remarkable mastery levels seen in her data. Hernandez maintains high expectations while ensuring that her students feel supported and engaged. Temple ISD’s Bilingual/ESL Department serves more than 1,250 students in grades Pre-K through 12.

“Having TISD educators recognized is a reflection of the excellence, dedication, and heart they bring to our students every single day,” said Connie Sisneros, Director of Bilingual/ESL for Temple ISD. “Their impact goes far beyond academics; they inspire every student they serve. I’m proud to work with such great forces.”

The BESA Awards are in their fourth year and the event was created to help recognize professionals working in Emergent Bilingual and ESL classes and departments. Award categories include peer nominations for the Texas Education Agency’s Title III Symposium along with team awards and individual honors in: Instruction, Parent, Family, and Community Engagement, Impact and Innovation, and Leadership. The 2026 TEA Title III Symposium will be held in July in San Antonio.
