Tem-Cats Win District 17-5A Title, Wildcats Finish Second

Like a triple jumper, or a child on his way into the toy store, Temple girls track and field coach Dexter Knox hopped, skipped and jumped through the infield at Wildcat Stadium as the District 17-5A meet drew to a close Thursday night.

In a fitting end to a district title drought that had stretched at least 15 years, the Tem-Cats’ first-year head coach celebrated with an exuberance usually reserved for high school youngsters.

“Boom! Boom! Boom!” Knox yelled as he hopped. “We did it.”

The Temple girls lowered the boom on the competition, capturing 12 medals on the meet’s final day and winning the 17-5A championship by 21½ points over runner-up Hutto.

It completed a charted journey for the Tem-Cats, whose point totals were lean to say the least through the first few meets of the season.
