Sizeable Temple Contingent Eyes State Meet Medals

In the realm of what-ifs, Temple would be contending for the Class 5A team title at this week’s UIL Track and Field State Championships.

If the Wildcats had been seven-hundredths of a second faster in the 4×100-meter relay at regionals, they would have joined Fort Bend Marshall as the only two 5A programs with all three boys relay teams in Austin.

“If we had gotten our 4×1 there, we could have legitimately challenged them,” Temple coach Ron Ford said. “Now something has to happen bad for them in order to make it an even contest.”

It’s a tough pill to swallow, or at least it would be if the Wildcats weren’t so busy preparing for four other events.

The Temple contingent will be eight athletes strong — its largest in more than a decade — and the Wildcats should contend for medals in at least three of their events Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
