Temple Caps Bi-District Sweep with Myers’ Walk-Off Hit, Area Round Information Announced

Wildcat Baseball Area Round!
Temple vs Cedar Park
Game 1 Thursday 7 p.m. @ Red Murff Field (UMHB)
Game 2 and 3 if necessary Saturday 1 p.m. (UMHB)

The Wildcats advanced into the area round after Noah Myers had the count in his favor and swung late through a 3-1 fastball. He gathered himself, as he usually does between pitches, and stepped back into the batter’s box.

To his left, taking a lead off third base was Zach Rumfield, representing the game-winning run — the Class 5A bi-district series-clinching run — Saturday at Lake Ridge High School.

“I had to do it for my town, for my community. I had to get it in play and get that run in somehow,” Myers said.

Bottom of the seventh inning, full count, two outs and Myers uncorked one of his long, swooping swings. His sharp ground ball to third base was snagged on the dive by Lindale’s Mason Hammonds, who got up and threw toward first. With a stretch to reach the bag, Myers was safe ahead of the bouncing throw, Rumfield scurried home and the Wildcats dramatically defeated the Eagles 2-1 in Game 2 to sweep the series and advance to the area round.

Myers, a senior designated hitter, was mobbed by teammates in a pile in foul territory down the first-base line. It was a much different scene than Temple’s somber 2016 first-round playoff exit.
