Jefferson teacher honored with Golden Apple Award

5/2/18

The Golden Apple Award is an exclusive recognition presented by the Temple Daily Telegram and once again this year a Temple ISD teacher was honored with this award.

Jefferson Elementary School fifth grade Math and Science teacher Bill Peters was one of five area teachers to receive a Golden Apple in 2018.

Teachers are nominated by their students, who write letters about the educator's impact for the nomination.

While the Telegram received an overwhelming number of letters this year about Mr. Peters, it was the nominating letter from Jefferson 5th grader Lyric Jones that was selected.

The Temple Daily Telegram printed a portion of Lyric's letter:

“‘Mr. Peters lights me up when I’m having a bad day,’” [Telegram circulation manager Mike] Hicks read from Lyric’s letter. “He received more than one nomination this year, and a consensus among them was ... (he pushes) his students to never say ‘I can’t.’”

This school year, Mr. Peters also started an ROTC Club at the school, which is another avenue where he is positively impacting these young lives.

For parents and other visitors at Jefferson during the cookout on Thursday, May 3, look for ROTC performances at 11:30 p.m., Noon and 12:30 p.m.
