Xavier Johnson is really fast. Quentin Johnston can jump really high. But based on the sarcastic responses, they aren’t exactly ready to sign off on what appeared to be an improvised moniker offered by coach Kwame Cavil.
“Speed and springs,” Cavil said, getting in return a couple of grimaces and some laughter that could’ve been considered courtesy chuckles from the two Temple student-athletes.
“Speed and springs,” Cavil repeated, coaxing more light-hearted reaction.
While a nickname might be up for discussion, there’s no debating that Johnson, a senior, and Johnston, a sophomore, have excelled in their track and field disciplines for Temple this season.
Johnson cashed in a spring’s worth of work two weeks ago by winning the Class 5A Region III 400-meter title in 47.61 seconds to ceremoniously clinch his spot at the UIL state championships Friday at Mike A. Myers Stadium two years after his inaugural appearance. Johnston’s quick rise up the high jump ranks culminated with his ticket to Austin, earned by clearing 6 feet, 6 inches to finish second at the regional meet.
