Thornton Elementary School

If the 2015 Bond passes on November 3rd (Early Voting Oct. 19-30), Temple ISD will build a new Thornton Elementary School.
 
This will allow Temple ISD to accommodate more students, and relieve crowding at other elementary schools.  
 
The current campus was not built in a way that makes it conducive to renovating into a 21st Century center for education.
 
The new school will be built next to the current campus, allowing students to remain in the school while the new building is constructed.
 
When complete, the new Thornton Elementary School will face Cottonwood Lane, alleviating traffic congestion in the neighborhood next to the school.
As you step in the front door of Thornton Elementary School, you stare down this hallway. During lunch, it is hard to move through the hallway.
As you look right, you look down this hall. With no storage in classrooms, storage shelves line the hallway.
Throughout the main hallway you find creative uses of space. This closet is now used for specialized instruction and parent meetings.
The current bathrooms do not meet the needs of this campus, including this bathroom where you have to straddle the toilet just to close the door.
The cafeteria is too small for Thornton's growing student population.
The stage is too small to fit larger groups of students during grade level performances.
As the student population at Thornton grows, it is a strain on the small kitchen.
Tile is coming up in many areas of the floor.
Further back in the building, old hallways are well kept by teachers, staff and students, but are not large enough.
Classrooms are not large enough, and do not have adequate storage.
Now step into the back hall.
Windows in some areas of the school have never been renovated.
The HVAC system is very old and constantly in need of repair.
Portable buildings are necessary to accommodate the growing student population.
The new Thornton Elementary School proposed in the 2015 Bond will allow the campus to accommodate 300 additional students, and relieve overcrowding at other Temple ISD elementary schools.
